Never Quit—Develop Grit

Significant achievements aren’t made without sacrifice, persistence, and dedication. You are fully capable of accomplishing whatever you set out to accomplish if you develop grit so that you will never quit. These three keys will put you on the path to becoming grittier than ever and help you toward the bright future you’ve envisioned.

Key #1: Fuel Your Passion

Being passionate will help you tremendously in this process. You must be passionate about what you’re pursuing to develop grit. Passion keeps you up at night. Passion moves you in the direction that you need to go. It doesn’t always come naturally. When you find an inkling of passion, you nurture and follow it. Because once you become passionate about something, you’ll develop grit and keep fighting.

Key #2: Build Upon Your Character

Although grit is a character trait, it’s hard to have it without a supporting cast.

Develop grit with sacrifice.

As we mentioned previously, the willingness to sacrifice is a must. You can’t reach your dreams without sacrificing time, energy, and sometimes even small joys. If it’s a distraction and it has the potential to hold you back—sacrifice it (at least for a little while). And to get gritty you’ll definitely have to let go of comfort.

Develop grit with persistence.

You’ll have to be relentless if you want to become gritty. Strive to be an unstoppable force. Don’t take “no” for an answer and brush each failure off while absorbing its lesson. Then, do it all over again.

Develop grit with dedication.

Staying dedicated to your goals is hard, but success isn’t supposed to be easy. If it were simple, it wouldn’t be rewarding. Commit to your goals, even when it feels like they’re getting further away. Put your head down during the battle and stay focused on completing the steps to reach the goals you’ve set. Once you reach one goal, be intentional about setting another and sticking to that.

Stay well-rounded.

Being well-rounded means you give equal effort to all characteristics. In this BetterUp© article about grit, the author lists five characteristics of grit:

  1. Perseverance
  2. Resilience
  3. Courage
  4. Passion
  5. Conscientiousness

It’s probably noticeable that grit isn’t a soloist. It’s a lead role with a great support network! And, if you put your effort into all of these characteristics, you’ll start to develop grit. Surround yourself with gritty people, and it’ll start to rub off on you too.

Key #3: Find Great Grit Guides

That’s right. The last step is pretty simple. Look around your community for examples to follow. There are people all around you who have developed grit for themselves either intentionally or because they were forced to. Either way, you’ll find many inspiring stories! And many of the people who lived those stories will be more than willing to help you develop grit for yourself. If you’re not so sure about how to find these people, get online. The internet is full of resources that will tell you all about grit.

This journey is one that you’ll likely never stop, and if you stick to it, you’ll see constant improvement and fulfillment. During this crazy adventure to develop grit, you will certainly make your mark on the world by impacting the lives of many.
