Using Your Influence for Good

You’ve worked hard to build a platform, make a name for yourself, and become a leader. Now what?

One of the best parts of having influence is the opportunity to channel it for good. Think about it … right now, you have the capability of using what you’ve built to go out and do great things in the world, while inspiring others to do the same. How awesome is that

Here are a few simple ways you can use your influence to positively affect those around you.

Lead by example.

Becoming a leader means you’ve established a dedicated group of followers who are constantly watching you. For this reason, you have the distinct opportunity to be a role model.

A key aspect of leading others is following the “Golden Rule”: Treat others the way you want to be treated. It seems cliché but this rule is important to follow no matter who you are … and it’s especially important as a leader. The people who look up to you will always be trying to mirror your actions, so make sure respect is at the forefront of everything you do. Make a point to perform random acts of kindness daily. Read this article to learn why this is such a valuable leadership strength.

Keep in mind that you should always act in a way that you would like to see others act. When faced with a dilemma, ask yourself, “How would I expect to see someone else in my position respond to this issue?” This will help you to keep your perspective and make decisions with integrity.

Build others up.

It’s likely that the people who look up to you truly care about what you think of them. Rather than brushing them off or acting like you’re too good for them, make the time to build them up and make them feel like they’re important—because they are!

Try to implement the “Five-Minute Favor” into your everyday routine. This concept is all about taking just 5 minutes of your day to benefit the lives of others within your network. This could be as simple as giving someone a compliment or offering them feedback. The point of this exercise is that building others up doesn’t have to take up too much of your time, it can even take just 5 minutes. Even though a quick compliment may seem incredibly simple, it can hold more significance than you may realize.

Be your authentic self.

It can be tempting to pretend your life is perfect all the time, especially when you have the pressure of an audience watching you. The truth is, what people want is to see your true, authentic self, rather than a cookie-cutter version of what you think you should be.

People can better relate to someone who’s not afraid to admit they have flaws. Why? Because we are human. At the end of the day, we all have struggles and things we must overcome. Rather than putting on a show because we feel so much pressure, why wouldn’t we use our imperfections to connect with others on a deeper level?

While you should always be authentic when seeing people in-person, it’s also important to remain authentic online. On social media, we are constantly seeing everyone’s highlight reels, but how much of it is actually real? Be sure to portray yourself in the most honest light in order to connect better with your audience.
